Will we see the automatic card drops for the current players any time soon? Or is that to do with steam itself, that they don't drop free cards when the game is for Free?

I don't think that will be possible, since the game is for Free.
But maybe there will be a way to buy the Premium version and get access to trading cards. -
I just checked my steam profile under "Badges", after scrolling down I found "Soulworker" badge progress tab, with following info: "No card drops remaining" clicking the: "How do I earn card drops" link shows this:
"Card drops in free to play games are rewards for spending money in game.
You have not purchased anything in game after this card set was released."

If Steamcards are getting dropped isn't determined by the type of game (paid or either F2P like SWO is), since other F2P games also offer card drops, for example Faeria. I guess that's one thing they'll add at the full release of the game which I'm really looking forward to

The way it works for F2P games is that for roughly ever $9 US you spend in the game, using the Steam wallet, you will get a card drop.
