Character/Item Renaming, not Translation

  • I'm going to be hostile about this one because really, WTF.


    I find the naming sense questionable for the character/item names.

    I'll be basing the original names to the JP one, as I don't have much knowledge on the KR one, of which SW NA/EU based off of.

    ...unless you have like an official thumbs-up from the original developers/writers or something for these name localizations, then I guess I am kinda okay with it. I'll have to direct the complaint to them or something, or can't complain about it at all.



    Well, sure, we're "localizing" it, but...Are we really gonna let Stella address Fuu-chan as Old Man?

    It definitely sounds off.

  • Reminder that the game is originally Korean (even if it came out in JP earlier because of circumstances)


    As such, you can't really go and compare the English names to the JP names when it's entirely possible the JP version took liberties with the names over the original KR as well.


    That being said I have no doubts Gameforge too took a lot of liberties (and flat out mistranslated some things). Glutton / Grutin, Zenny / Dzenai, Rucco / Rocco and Yomi / Yumi are the most noteable actual errors out of those you listed yourself. One could argue they don't want issues with Capcom for using Zenny as their currency name, but I don't think they have a copyright on that so...


    Seoni is actually more accurate than Sunny if they're both transliterations of the original KR name.


    As for 'Old Man'..I went and checked this one myself since it's so different from JP's 'Fuu-chan' but...sure enough, over on KR, the evil spirits she summons she calls something akin to "grandpa". So GF isn't far off on this one.

    Well, you can just see this as a basic localization feedback and comparison, or something. No harm there.

    Nah, you can still point out poor inconsistencies, spelling, missing words, or wrong info.

    Speaking off, no one's posted yet how Stella's Spirit Orb skill says +50% Attack while it's actually +50. I'll....make a thread about that later if I remember it.

    Depends on you, i like to read the story of the games that i play but some ppl prefer to mindlessly slaugther enemies... and nothing wrong with that I think, everyone likes different things.

  • Failforge will just call it "LOCALISATION CHANGES" and "WESTERNIZED CONTENT", while they clearly spent very little money on good translators and just decided to use random names for a lot of characters, in-game items, etc.


    Honestly I wouldn't care if they went a little wild with translating. But the problem is:

    - original JP/KR names MADE SENSE, while the english translation MAKES NO SENSE and is OBJECTIVELY WORSE

    - a lot of item translations and their descriptions are wrong, deceptive and clearly show the translators have no @Edit clue to how this game works

    If a character gets 3 different names across 3 different languages, who's to say which of the 3 "makes sense" and is "objectively better"?


    Let's say for example a character is called:

    (KR) Sungmi

    (JP) Mikoto

    (EN) Candace


    How do you OBJECTIVELY determine which of the three is best? It's all preference.


    You need to revise your meaning of objective; Which name someone prefers is entirely subjective and while yes, I would personally, subjectively, prefer to stick to the original KR names, others may enjoy the JP ones or even the NA/EU ones more.

    Let's not forget that JP went equally wild with the translations of some item names compared to the original KR. It's not even close to a perfectly faithful translation, far from it. Using JP as a sort of gold standard when it itself did the same things gameforge is doing is just fanboyism for said version rather than constructive feedback.

    Outright mistranslations though, such as keeping the name in-tact but then spelling it wrong (ie Rucco instead of Rocco) are obviously bad and should be fixed. Same for item descriptions that are supposed to be accurate, because they're not up for debate. X is what item Y does, and while changing the name of Y is fine, changing X so it's misleading or wrong is not.

  • If this is handled like Elsword, translation goes Korean -> German -> Everything else. GameForge is a German company after all. This can explain some English translation as the words are localized to German first.


    However someone working at GameForge should confirm if the translation process for SoulWorker is really done this way. Until then it's speculation on my part.

    Yep, ti was confirmed.

    And I was talking with germans, they say that german translation is equally bad.
