I was actually surprised we didn't get English voice over in this game. Other foreign MMOs released in NA/EU I played has English voice over ... the publisher usually does both text translations and voice over as part of their localization work. JP's publisher provided voice overs for their region in spite of having a much smaller playerbase and charging much less on their cash shop, so I see no reason for GameForge to not provide voice overs for our version.

It was probably to avoid extra costs when it comes to publishing the game and to speed up release. I mean lets get real here look how long it took for them to just do localization which turned to be just translating text. Doing voice overs would have added months that process, so i'm not really surprised they didn't do it.

Yeah, but that's true for all publishers, and yet they still do voice overs. That reasoning applies to NA/EU BDO, but we got voice overs. That same reasoning applies to JP's version of this game, yet they still got voice over. This is actually the first foreign ported MMO for NA/EU that I've played that doesn't have English voice over, and I've played a lot of MMOs.

Avoiding extra cost as a reason to not do voice over when they have a much larger playerbase AND charge much more in their cash shop compared to JP does not go well with me. It's ironic that I can see justification for JP to not do voice overs due to much less revenue potential and yet they still do it for their players..

While i agree with you it really comes down to how much effort a publisher is willing to put into the localization of a game. Gameforge is hardly the first one to not use english voice acting, the most recent game that also didn't use voice actors was Revelation Online. That game is a prime example of a publisher that put the absolute bare minimum effort into their game.

To be fair though i would not have used the english voice overs if i had the option to change them, and if i didn't i would just turn off the voices.

Also, using revelation online as an example is not exactly encouraging since their servers are already ghost towns. If the only examples you have are failures, then all the more reason for GameForge to NOT follow that path.

Japan has an abundant voice industry, and holds their VAs in pretty high esteem. When we get english voice-overs, people criticize how bad it is most of the time and wonder about why they can't have x voiceover.(or they just dump the voice pack in, sure who knows)

Much work, some money, extremely little payoff.

  • The west also has an abundant voice industry. The rest of your reply applies to all western publishers, yet they still do voice overs. Like I said, the only MMOs that doesn't have voice overs tend to be failures, all the more reason for GameForge to NOT follow that path.

The western voice industry(that is, for smaller developments such as games) is incredibly small compared to their eastern counterparts. There is just very few people who want to dedicate to a mmo, and actors are constantly changed. The translation can often be very awkward and sometimes you end up with rather strange voice overs.

I'm not saying that it can't be done well, but the only ones that have done well have a ton of money invested in them, or end up originally developed for an english audience.

You're just making things up at this point. There's no such thing as a voice actor dedicated to MMO. You just find ANY voice actor to do the voice overs. According to you, we should be listening to Korean voice overs in NA/EU BDO right now because how would they find these rare people to do their voice overs? We should be hearing Korean voice overs in NA/EU Riders of Icarus too right? Nexon is one of the worst publishers out there and even they have english voice overs in their MMOs. How low do you have to go to justify this?

Whoah now, using the JP voices isn't because file modification is against the ToS (well it is, but I digress), they are literally legally unable to use the JP voices period without shilling out a ton of money for Copyright reasons. Gameforge does not own the JP voices, heck, LionGames doesn't own the JP voices. The only one legally able to use the JP voices is the JP server. It'd be the same if we had a dub (god forbid). After watching all the webisodes, I think it'd be a good laugh if we had Erwin the Hedgehog in-game.

  • The developers are actually Japanese and thats why the game has japanese touch and audience and was released first in japan. Why do ppl say its Korean? Because the Japanese devs got their funding in Korea and therefore live in Korea (or were already in Korea) and made the mmo, yet they released it for their country first but it got developed under the Korean publisher Smilegate.

  • It's a Korean game made by a Korean developer, Lion Games, based off Seoul?

  • The ppl working at Lion Games are japanese though. A company can be in Korea without their devs nationality being Korean.

If I was to look for a funder for an MMO and a Korean company would offer it to me, I'd move to Korea aswell and develop it there. The game would be a Korean mmo but not done by Koreans.

    The CEO is Korean though

What if there is an Englishman working at Lion Games, does that make Lion Games an English company now?!?? Oh no!

Wait Lion Games is a kr company where do u get that they are japanese the HQ is in Seoul and main version of the game is KR not the JP one lol

It's a money grab - what did y'all expect? (I still go into Rocco Town and leave Rucco Town).

That fact the game is still in Beta, but it and the cash ship were shoved out the door with the bare minimum of effort tells you everything you need to know about the people publishing this game.

  • You may be right, but the optimist in me would like to believe you're wrong. :)

This man got caught with his pants down. JP was released first because JP had a publisher, KR did not. Just a bit of news for ya.

All this talk about who did this or that first. Does it really matter? What matters is what we get and pay for it which at the moment is nothing.

SW has been out for at least 2 weeks now and nothing has changed, crafting is the same, EP is the same, cash shop is the same. As some people are defending the cash shop and EP system as it GF might not even bother changing it.
