I always sprint through that area because the Heli is so slow and I've had a few try-hards attempt to catch me but they can't from what I've noticed. I just laugh when their abysmal attempt for a single kill doesn't work out and they run back into the danger zone with their heads hanging low.

I never had trouble traversing the wastelands of District 6. maybe you should check your back, make sure there isn't a target painted on it?

Only trouble I've had there for now was when I had to go back to rucco and candus for quests. On the way from rucco to candus, there were 2 people camping the safe zone entrance to pick on lowbies. I didn't even see them when they jumped me lol. Spammed roll and ran out of stamina and super armor. Managed to walk to the safe zone tho on half health lol.
