How many costume packs left until the game is "released"

  • it's simple really.

they use the term "open beta" instead of "official release" as an excuse for not fixing all bugs before releasing the game.

they'll change it to "official release" when they feel like all major bugs have been dealt with.

but it being a beta doesn't prevent them from releasing costumes.

Open beta..more like open your wallet. They dont even have the decency to address players about the only announcement since the launch of beta..the cash shop.

  • Personally, I’m thrilled with the pase that they are releasing costumes. A lot of other games drag their feet releasing cosmetics. Plus, they haven’t released an outfit i rly rly love yet, so I like that they are releasing them quickly for that reason as well, hopefully won’t have to wait too long for something I like.

Yeah I like my costumes and I feel some other games take way too long to release them (looking at u DFO).

In this case though I'd rather they release the game before the costumes.

    LAMO really?

Yes really. Why? U got a problem with that?

here’s the thing, I play a Dark Knight in BDO, and they take months to release a single new costume for my class. So, this whole thing here where they are already releasing costumes gives me hope that I won’t have to wait for 3 months checking every single week for costumes only to be disappointed.

I’d also like to point out, if they didn’t offer cosmetics in the shop now like they are, this game would look like Clone Worker Online, and for some that’s a huge turn off. Such as myself.

  • Between costumes, and new content, i, personally choose new content

  • granted, but this only their Open Beta. They can only cram so much content into it at this phase of release, otherwise they wouldn’t have a whole lot to add in afterwards and the game would go stale.

  • tbh no one is pushing us to buy those items on premium shp. but still we are buying it coz some people are more concern of how their character looks. "Free to play" pls dont expect more :)  Komari

No I guess that I haven't played alot of games that rely on the cash shop for your character to look decent. I played BDO but never bought any costumes. That's one reason I respect BnS...They allowed you to get plenty of costumes ingame reasonably and it didn't feel like you had to look like crap until the cash shop opened.

  • A free to play game has been playable in beta for a month and there are issues? Oh my God are you serious? This is catastrophic...

So what if they wanna release a new costume every week? Why are you so mad about what other people do with their money?

Have you asked yourself how this business works? Gameforge needs to recover the cost of the initial investment of buying the publishing license for the game, not only that but they will soon also need to pump new money into updates. You know the two missing characters? Yes, Jin and Iris. That stuff ain't free and it isn't part of the core version of the game, it's an update that GF needs to pay for. Developers don't send new content to publishers for free, so publishers need to be profitable in order to keep the game updated in their region. You know what this means? Those people buying costumes are actually funding the future of this game. They are the reason that free-riders like you can stay entertained. If I was you I'd be thankful rather than angry.

    Food for thought...

  • I would agree with you about them needing to recoup loses but if that's the case why not do starter packs like other mmo's? Why make the whole game available? There is really no difference between what they are doing and a game actually launching except its not launched "officially".

  • Honest question here, I might be missing your point but what is the difference between releasing costumes now versus releasing costumes after official launch?

They should really be focusing on releasing the full game including the characters that some people are waiting for. Like me and many other with Iris lol

Preach my man preach, this game is so pointless to me without Iris, but hey we have more costumes for charcs we don't even wanna play. kappa

I don't think you know how this business works either. :)

Publishers do have to recoup some initial costs like deployment (servers, bandwidth ...) and localization (translations, voice overs ...) costs. [In the case of GF, they skimped on the voice overs, but most publishers have to pay for that as well.]

But they're NOT paying for the game in bits and pieces like you claim. They don't buy a "core game", then pay for each additional update, and then pay again for new chars. That's just not how things work.

Think of it as a partnership where the developers create a game, but don't want to deal with sales and marketing and deployment of their product as well as translations for the various regions around the world. This is where the various regional publishers comes in to handle those things.

The developers make their money from the publishers making money off you. Because the publishers are basically their sales and marketing team. They don't make their money selling content to the publishers.

There are exceptions to every rule, but what I described is more or less how most developer/publisher relationships work.

  • One more set, 20 left to go before the game is released.

I'll give it to them though that they're fixing some of the issues from before. I can switch characters now and the area completion screen doesn't show in the 90s anymore.

  • That's exactly how traditional video games work, especially console games and single player pc games. However MMORPGs don't necessarily work in that way.

With Tera online (also published by Gameforge) it certainly doesn't work like that. It was even said in the forums that En Masse / Gameforge need to purchase the updates. Online games and especially mmorpgs require constant re-development, new content, patches, updates, cosmetics, events, maps, etc. Otherwise, how is Bluehole Studios making money? Or in this case, Lion Games.

Now, the problem is publishers have gained such a level of power and control over developers nowadays that it doesn't really leave developers much room for negotiation and makes them have to deliver stuff under any imposed condition if they want to survive. But that's another story.

  • If was running a restaurant, and the deep fryer went on the fritz, I'll get to fixing that whenever I can, but I'm not gonna stop selling food, or stop promoting the chef's special. Sure, the customers that care more about deep fried food are gonna whine and complain, give my restaurant 1/5 stars on google reviews, etc. but I'm still making money. Eventually I'll fix my fryer, bitches will stop bitching, and we're all good.

Gameforge is the restaurant, we're the customers. And it's all in a day's business.

  • I think what you describe is how traditional games work while what I describe is how most mmos work.

As to how developers get paid, I already told you, they get a portion of the sales from the publishers.

As for your claim that publishers need to purchase updates, I'd like to see a reference. If it's true, then it would be the exception rather than the rule.

The only thing I agree with you on is that publishers have a lot of power and control over developers.

PS. Maybe you're thinking of customized content. For example, sometimes a region will request a special set of costumes made for them. In this case, the publisher will give the developer "extra" money for that development. This is why sometimes you have special costumes in 1 region and they don't resell it on another region, because it was a special custom made version paid for by that region's publisher.

    EDIT: Removed redundancy.
