Gacha vs Pay to Wear

  • Gacha costumes will come here sooner or later. JP had them in the beginning for summer costumes. KR had them once or twice. TW had them as well. Gameforge likes gacha costumes a lot. Tera by GF has premium costumes in gacha boxes, with "special packs" - buy a package of 200 boxes for a guarantee of getting the permanent version of the rare costume!

This is the thing I'm worried about. Vindictus (Nexon NA) started out with just selling direct purchases of their basic costumes and only started hiding some premium costumes behind gachas later on the game's life cycle. We're still in the 1st few weeks of open beta here, so not seeing gachas now doesn't mean we won't see them later in this game.

  • I wouldn't be surprised at all if they get added later on. It's just too easy to make money on it. I just wonder how the prices will be here.

In elsword for example IBs cost like $1 a pop. I think Closers it was also $1 a try.

inb4 $3-$4 per try with chances of getting hp/mp pots in here omegalul

  • If Gacha's of that level come out without any means to obtain it naturally, I'll have to reconsider whether this is the game I want to play. Right now I'm enjoying myself as I can just have all the fashion with little effort and a fat enough paycheck.

I'm not really interested in gambling for my Fashionista. Shrug. (Also no I can't really quote each post in put it in one post on my work computer. Sorry)

Yes you can, dummy. The forum software is what handles it!

Unless your work computer isn't really a computer, then nevermind.

  • First of all lootboxes are not gambling. Can you cash in if you win? If it would, well.. lots of problems. There are some regions in this world were it's straight out forbidden to participate in gambling. That means if you play a game with lootboxes and it would be gambling, you would commit a crime. Of course all these game would bee 18+ as well and maybe even every hard to buy. Not nice is it?

    It's a gray area.

Gacha can be successfully if used correctly. Personally I only know of one games that does it right and is extremely successful with it. Basically it comes down to good rates, a single hit must be worth it and even if you miss what you get must be considered useful. Or at least have a good possibility to be useful. Another important part is, that there must be no competition. If the player plays the gacha game, he must do it for himself and not to keep up with the game or others. A lot of games fail here.

Also lootboxes with costumes are my least problem. What do you think upgrading is? A gacha with success, nothing or worth then nothing as possible outcome. This is exactly what I just said one should not do.

I do agree there need to be some law that after X tries you get what you spend money for. The thing I hate about lootboxes is paying money and not getting what I want and no compensation.

  • If I had to choose between good gachashit and no gachashit, I'd choose no gachashit.

However "good" someone might perceive it to be, it's still RNG. Paying for RNG is something that should be left for gambling and shouldn't be in games. RNG for cosmetics might not be "gambling" in the sense that you put in money and have a chance of making more money while doing so, but it does build an unhealthy habit for those that have little to no self control and still end up blowing tens of hundreds just for the satisfaction of getting that sweet costume piece from the gachashit. There's like a whole thing with legislation (at least in the EU) being discussed because of this kind of thing.

  • Well that's not what you choose from. You choose between gachashit and 20€+ per expansion pack and probably 50€+ initially.

Although that would have some advantages... Mainly that they have to make content to get money.

  • Yeah I really hope Loot Boxes never make it into this game. I'd much rather pay for the outfit if I really want it. Right now I've just been buying them with gold but if they were Gacha there's no way they'd be as cheap as they are 'cause people would spend $20 and never get an outfit they want. I play Mabinogi and I'll spend 20 just trying to get one piece of an outfit and only end up with garbage, it's frustrating. I'd much rather pay the 20 bucks than get the gold for it since the only way to make gold in that game is to resell stuff or run a super long mission over and over just for like 1/40th of the price of the outfit.

  • I think the Akasha Card thingy is this games lootbox. All 2 Star or higher are locked to it and some of them are really good.

I prefer paying for what I want rather then gambling for it as well.

Akasha Transmitters are pretty easily farmable, the real RNG catch are brooches if you want to try to get the best sets and set effects.

  • Oh yeah, I forgot those existed, lol.

Oh and farmable or not doesn't really matter. It's still a lootbox. Even gacha games often allow you to get their premium currency.

Just wanna say that lootboxes are definitely gambling because they use the same tactics as gambling. Even worse they are used on young people who already Don have good decision making skills. Our definition has not caught up with our reality. I agree with you on the other things you said though.

No, loot boxing and gacha are considered borderline gambling. There was an effort to make loot boxes in games illegal and classified as actual gambling a while ago.

I get technically they are not gambling but we all know it is. It's actually worst because at least in real gambling they have to tell you the odds. Anyway the point is the very same tactics are used by casinos as the gaming industry and some countries have made them illegal. Hopefully they will be illegal in the US too one day.
