look up sisters of mercy/bauhaus (goth rock artists) joy division(post-punk) and Clan of Xymox(darkwave) , all roots of the true goth subculture born in the early 80's

at it's birth,the gothic subculture was purely and only music based, it spread to other stuff like litterature and fashion later on as it grew but at its core, it's music based, the first persons who were considered as gothfathers weren't actually dressing all black/dying their hairs in black nor having everything as black and edgy as possible, they looked like normal music, making music filled with a sense of emptiness
